The Indian cricket team’s ICC T20 World Cup run came to an end in the semifinal against England after a devastating 10-wicket loss. Now the T20 setup will undergo a major overhaul since the management’s approach to the format appears out of date and facing harsh criticism from the fans.

India withdraws a number of important players, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah from India’s Tour of New Zealand. Shikhar Dhawan will serve as captain of the ODI squad during the team’s three ODI matches against New Zealand in place of skipper Rohit Sharma, while Hardik Pandya will lead India’s T20I team. Rahul Dravid has been allowed a sabbatical, thus VVS Laxman will take over as interim head coach for the white-ball tour to New Zealand.

India and New Zealand recently participated in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, although they did not play one another there. Despite reaching the semi-finals, both teams met the same fate after India lost to England and the Kiwi lost to Pakistan. India replaced their captain following their heartbreaking defeat, while Kane Williamson remains New Zealand’s captain indestructible despite the team’s failure against Pakistan. In the forthcoming matches against India, he will continue to captain New Zealand’s ODI and T20I teams.

After receiving harsh criticism for its strategy in T20 cricket and its choice to remain with its old practices, BCCI is ready to make a tough decision in the next two years to bring about a significant makeover for the T20 World Cup 2024. The possible step of appointing two captains clearly means that the Indian team’s
poor show at the T20 World CUP will cost Rohit Sharma his T20 Captaincy.

It is also very likely that some of the veteran cricketers may leave the team soon, while the younger players will be placed on the side. Recent reports suggest that Dinesh Karthik and Mohammad Shami, who is 37 and 32 years old respectively, may not be part of the T20I setup for much longer. Although Bhuvneshwar Kumar was able to get a berth in the team for the New Zealand tour, the BCCI is also keeping an eye on him and he may not be included in the Indian team’s plans for the next World Cup.

Furthermore, Washington Sundar is set for a fresh start with Team India as the BCCI prepares to phase out Ravichandran Ashwin in accordance with the T20 revamp. Despite the all-rounder putting on a streak of outstanding performances at the beginning of 2021, Sundar’s progress has undoubtedly been constrained by a number of injuries. Since his feats of strength with both the bat and the ball in Australia, he has endured 4 serious injuries and contracted Covid-19, causing him to step back from the Indian team for an extended period of time. There are many unanswered questions and uncertainty around the futures of the two prominent figures Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as well.

Although it is not clear if they will participate in another World Cup with the team or not, a decision is expected to be made soon. To keep him fresh, Virat Kohli may only play T20Is in important series and competitions and will be instructed to concentrate on ODI and Test cricket. According to reports, the BCCI has scheduled a meeting for a performance evaluation with coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, and former skipper Virat Kohli. The meeting will be called by the BCCI Secretary, and it will cover and review the Indian team’s dismal performance at the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022.
