Mumbai City FC has accomplished an amazing feat in the ninth iteration of the Hero ISL that will go down in the history of Indian football. Mumbai City, who finished first in the league table, won the prestigious ISL League Winner’s Shield for the second consecutive time thanks to their unrelenting pursuit of perfection.
Let’s look at the top five achievements Mumbai City FC has permanently engraved to their names in ISL 2023.
Top 5 records made by Mumbai City FC in ISL 2022-23
1. Most points in a single Hero ISL season
Mumbai City broke the previous league record of 43 points held by Jamshedpur FC in the 2021–22 season by scoring 46 points in the league stage, which included 14 wins, 4 draws, and 2 losses. The Islanders beat FC Goa 5-3 in a historic away win to clinch the record.
2. The longest winning and unbeaten streak in ISL history
Mumbai’s incredible winning streak began on November 12th, 2022, with a stunning 6-2 victory over Chennaiyin FC, and it lasted for almost three months until the Islanders notched their 11th straight victory against Jamshedpur FC. Mumbai City’s winning streak ultimately came to an end in a 1-1 draw with Hyderabad FC.
Mumbai City went 18 games without a loss, starting with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Hyderabad FC in their inaugural encounter and ending with the legendary 5-3 victory against FC Goa that clinched the league title. Mumbai’s unbeaten streak and a chance to become the first team to go unbeaten in the league were ultimately spoiled after Bengaluru FC defeated them in the penultimate match of the season.
3. Most goals in a single season and most goals by Indians
Mumbai City’s relentless attacking and attractive football earned them 54 goals, the most by any club in a single Hero ISL season, beating FC Goa’s 51 goals in 2019-20. The core of the Islanders’ team is made up of young, gifted Indian players who have flourished under Des Buckingham and scored the most goals by Indians in a single Hero ISL campaign.
The Islanders’ top goal scorers this season—Lallianzuala Chhangte, Bipin Singh, Apuia Ralte, Vinit Rai, Vikram Partap Singh, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, and Mehtab Singh—have collectively scored 25 goals, just over half of the team’s total. This remarkable achievement shows how much the squad can depend on its Indian players to score goals and bodes well for Indian football in general.
4. Mumbai scored in a record-setting 28 straight games
Mumbai City broke the previous record of 14 consecutive games held by Chennaiyin FC, NorthEast United, Delhi Dynamos, and Kerala Blasters FC by scoring in 28 straight games, creating a new standard for the Hero ISL.
The Islanders scored in every game of the 2022–23 season, with the exception of their last league match against East Bengal FC, a run that started on January 25 and lasted for more than a year. All Indian football fans have been glued to the television thanks to this goal-scoring skill, which is a testimony to the Islanders’ fast-paced aggressive playstyle.
5.Most consecutive road victories in a season
Strong teams always have a strong home record as a key component, but champions are those who can express their superiority even when they are away from their home field. With consecutive eight victories, Mumbai City has demonstrated its superiority in away games as well, breaking Bengaluru FC’s previous record of seven great victories in the 2017–18 season.
The Islanders have more to highlight their supremacy in road games if the outstanding streak isn’t enough. The club set a new mark for the most away goals scored in a season with a total of 30 goals scored in their away games.
Mumbai will be back in action for the semifinals
The Islanders are preparing for the semifinals and will be a force to be reckoned with no matter who they play. The team’s resilience and spirit are evident in their extraordinary league run, and they have raised the bar for pursuing teams.
The group will return to the Mumbai Football Arena on On March 7, for the semifinal’s first leg, where they will face the winner of the first Knockout tie between the 4th-placed and 5th-placed teams, which will take place on March 3.
